2010 Essentially Ellington Finalist Bands

EE Celebrates 15 Survey - We Need You!

The EE Celebrates 15 Survey is the key to locating our EE community and mapping the impact the program has had. Our goal is to have 1,500 EE community members take a survey and tell us how EE has made a difference in their lives.   Please take a  minute to fill out a survey and be counted!

Please complete only one EE survey based on your first experience with the program:

Alumni – played EE music as a member of a high school or community band

Band Director – taught high school jazz band (or community band) with EE music

Parent/Guardian – had a son or daughter who participated in the EE program

General Fan – volunteered at an EE Festival either as a JALC volunteer or a school group chaperone (non-parent), or a general fan of EE and not in any of the above groups.

Responses will be compiled and presented on this page and at the Competition & Festival, May 8-10, 2010 in New York City.

What words/phrases would you use to describe your experience with Essentially Ellington?
artistically enriching

What is your favorite Essentially Ellington piece to play and why?
Blue Serge—it had a sassy sound at some points, especially the beginning, and it felt tormented and very deliberate.

Moon Over Cuba. Great solo and piece in a style Duke didn't play/write much in. Has almost been lost from the jazz world. I really enjoyed it, it was something very new to all of us.

Perdido—the energy on the stage was something I'll remember for the rest of my life.

Quote of the WeekEE Alumni Response: :
"Essentially Ellington really opened up my eyes to the wonderful music of Duke Ellington. It was a great experience because it fostered a professional environment with some of the best jazz musicians in the world. In addition, the program allowed myself, and future students the opportunity to experience how leadership and teamwork can have tremendous impacts on how we approach situations in the classroom as well as in the professional environment. For me, personally, the experience was especially crucial as a basis of conversation in interviews. I was truly amazed at the number of individuals in business environments who recognized the name of the program and respected the benefits that it promotes."
