In-School Workshops: Each finalist will each receive an in-school workshop with one JALC clinician / musician to better prepare for the finals and to improve students' understanding of Ellington. The workshops are free of charge, and are also open to local Essentially Ellington participants for observation, when space and schedules permit.
Mentors: Each finalist band will be assigned a mentor who is a professional musician. Mentors are often members of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra or Essentially Ellington clinicians, and serve as a source of information and advice during the festival weekend.
Awards: In addition to first, second, third place, and honorable mention awards; all finalist bands receive a cash stipend. Awards are also given to outstanding vocalist, sections, and soloists, for which members of all 15 finalist bands are eligible.
Costs: Lodging, travel expenses, and meals are the responsibility of finalist bands. A trip this size can be a significant financial challenge, and each year finalist bands have met the challenge through a variety of fund raising activities, gifts from local businesses, etc. In the past, cost of group prices has varied from $5,000 - $30,000 depending on the length of stay, travel means, and types of activities included. New Horizons Tour and Travel, Inc. (NHTT), has blocks of hotel rooms in various price ranges on hold for finalist bands.
Financial Assistance: We have been able to secure travel stipend funds to help defray finalists' expenses based on demonstrated need. If financial concerns jeopardize your submission of a recording, please contact us.
