In the spring of 2006, Jazz at Lincoln Center piloted its first Regional Essentially Ellington High School Jazz Band Festivals. The noncompetitive regional festivals are designed to offer high school jazz bands of all levels the opportunity to perform the music of Duke Ellington and other seminal big band composers and to receive professional feedback from Jazz at Lincoln Center clinicians and other jazz professionals in their own communities.
During the 2010-11 school year all members are eligible to take part in regional festivals. Participating bands are required to play at least one tune from the Essentially Ellington library and receive a post-performance workshop, soloist awards and written or taped adjudicator feedback.
