JALC presents JazzStories—Roy Haynes
Drummer Roy “Snap Crackle” Haynes has played and recorded with every important jazz musician of the last 70 years—including Charlie Parker, Sarah Vaughan, John Coltrane and Thelonious Monk, to name but a few—and he continues to perform around the world today, well into his eighties. In 1947, at Harlem’s famed Savoy Ballroom, Haynes began a two-year stint playing with tenor saxophone legend Lester “Pres” Young. Young’s unique use of slang, a snowstorm, and the theft of a drum set are the topics of this entertaining excerpt from a 2008 JALC Jazz Talk, hosted by Dr. Lewis Porter.
