JALC presents JazzStories—Samba Jazz and Bossa Nova

Brazilian drummer Duduka Da Fonseca, pianist Helio Alves, and vocalist Maucha Adnet take a break from performing the music of Antonio Carlos Jobim at Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola to talk with JALC’s David Goren about the difference between the cool, quiet naturalism of the ‘Bossa Nova,’ and the more instrument-rich ‘Samba Jazz,’ a blend of Brazilian rhythm and jazz improvisation, both created in Brazil during the 1950s and 60s. Adnet also shares Jobim’s explanation of why his “Girl From Ipanema” endures as the emblem of this continually popular music, and Da Fonseca talks about the famous bar where the song was written.
