Jazz & Popular Song
Besides being a world-class pianist and vocalist, Michael Feinstein is one of world’s foremost scholars on America’s popular song. In his second season as curator of this program, he will continue to delve into the common musical bonds between jazz and the Great American Songbook.
Ethel Waters: Blues, Broadway, and Jazz
May 1-2
Ethel Waters was a singular entertainer who conquered Broadway, nightclubs, movies, television and radio. At one time, she was the highest-paid entertainer on Broadway. She was a major player in the introduction of jazz to a broader American market, but her influence on the very nature of jazz itself cannot be overstated. Michael Feinstein will host and perform in a unique concert that combines the personal history of Ethel Waters with a celebration of her importance to our musical culture.
Cy Coleman: Bringing Jazz to Broadway
May 15-16
A musical journey from jazz pianist and leader of a much-in-demand jazz trio to legendary Broadway composer, more than anyone else Cy Coleman brought the sound of big, brassy jazz to the Great White Way. One only need think of Sweet Charity’s “Hey, Big Spender,” and its bright blare of horns, to recognize Coleman’s signature sound, a musical style that dominated Broadway for more than a generation. Shows like City of Angels, The Life, and many others were permeated by Coleman’s propensity for jazz. Michael Feinstein, who featured Cy Coleman as a jazz pianist in his club the year before the famed composer died, leads a cast that illustrates Coleman’s profound jazz influence on contemporary Broadway.
Sweet & Low Down: How Popular Standards Became Jazz Classics
June 5-6
American popular song and jazz are not only interrelated, but are actually two sides of the same coin. In the second annual presentation of this special concert starring Michael Feinstein and his handpicked featured guest singers, the unique relationship and common roots between these seemingly unrelated musical worlds will be revealed. This show will present classic songs from two viewpoints: as they were originally conceived for Broadway, Hollywood, and Tin Pan Alley, and then as they were re-invented by jazz performers to become classics in the jazz repertoire.
